A set dining table represents one of the most fundamental forms of human security—a place where one can sit, eat, and feel at home. In the installation, however, the individual elements of this familiar situation are physically joined into a single inseparable whole. The chair grows through the table and the plate, on which, instead of food, a chain is served. It is the chain that transforms security into attachment. What provides a person with stability and makes everyday existence possible also binds them to the conditions they depend on in order to live. Home, food, safety, and stability are therefore not simply things we take for granted, but part of a relationship of mutual dependence from which it is impossible simply to step away. The partially burned candle introduces the element of time into this tightly bound situation. It reminds us that even seemingly permanent certainties exist only for a limited time, and that the very need for security is inseparably linked to the awareness that it may one day be lost.
