Out There

Museum of Jindřichův Hradec

Czech Republic, 2020-2021

The object is created by combining found items from the museum’s collection into a single compact whole. Furniture, skis, suitcases, and other objects associated with home, leisure, and travel are layered and intertwined, as if all the fundamental securities of life could be gathered and preserved in one place. Within this accumulated mass, however, a small window appears. Looking through it reveals a miniature world with the figure of a traveller. The idea of something beyond its boundaries thus enters an otherwise enclosed and seemingly secure space. The installation brings together two fundamental human needs: the desire for security and a sense of belonging, and at the same time the need to cross their boundaries. Home provides safety, but the view from its window can lead outward—towards a journey, the unknown, and the idea of freedom.
