The world we perceive as logical and comprehensible is shaped, to a large extent, by our ideas about what things are for and what qualities they possess. We associate a car with movement and the ability to cover distances, while a house represents stability, security, and a place to return to. These two principles naturally complement each other, yet combining them does not necessarily mean bringing together their possibilities. Absurdity arises when reality begins to diverge from our expectations. We encounter it in situations that may have their own logical explanations, yet, taken as a whole, seem nonsensical or internally contradictory. The individual elements of such situations may each serve a clear purpose, while their combined arrangement negates that very purpose. The boundary between logic and absurdity may therefore lie not in the things themselves, but also in the relationships that emerge between them. Karavan deliberately amplifies this contradiction. A house made of stone and concrete, with neither doors nor windows, is built into the body of an immobile car. The car thus loses any remaining possibility of movement, while the house offers neither access nor the possibility of habitation. The resulting object resembles a camper van, yet provides neither shelter nor the freedom to travel. Two things whose combination should expand our possibilities instead deprive each other of their original purpose. The paradox of Karavan lies not only in its lack of functionality, but also in the fact that each of its components remains comprehensible in its own right. It is only through their relationship that a situation emerges which defies our expectations. The object thus suggests that absurdity need not be the opposite of logic, but may instead be its very consequence.
