Cup
Object, 13 x 7 cm, ceramics, ground coffee beans, sugar
Private collection
2013
Cup was created from fragments of a broken porcelain cup, reassembled into a new form. The original object can no longer be restored or used, yet its fragments become the material from which a new object emerges. Substances directly associated with the cup’s original function become incorporated into its surface. Coffee and sugar cease to be its contents and instead become part of its form. After its destruction, an everyday functional object is thus transformed into a kind of small monument to its own former purpose. Created in 2013, the object became the first in a series of works based on the principle of breaking down an original form and rearranging its fragments into a new one—a principle later developed further in the installation Reforma.
