Exhibition of the group ‘Representation’

Representation of Decay

‘Representation’ is a contrasting and diverse project group comprising of seven contemporary artists, all graduates of the Academy of Visual Arts in Prague and the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. Project ‘Representation’ is based on a repeated presentation of individual attitudes and visions, approaches to life, art, or oneself and one’s self-discipline. These attitudes, their development, visualization, or depiction, are confronted and discussed every week at editorial meetings and subsequently presented in visual form supported by personal texts in the monthly catalogue ‘Representation’, available in print in small numbers and in PDF. The value and intensity of each individual approach is seen in its ability to continuously and repeatedly confirm itself, and thus also in its ability to keep on deepening its meaning and impact. This institutionalized form of work confronts artistic creation with problems that are common in corporate environments, such as regular presentation of works-in-progress, meeting deadlines, and so on. The exhibition ‘Representation of Decay’ presents seven consistent attitudes across different artistic genres in the form of each artist mapping out their mental development in visual form. This gives rise to a rich and lively exhibition celebrating a diverse spectrum of visitors. The ‘Re-presentation’ project is a kind of a probe into the world of individuals of a middle generation meeting on a common field, which they turn into a battlefield in their own ways. A warzone where classical painting fights for its life with internet generators, where street art is confronted with streetwear and fashion overlaps, alongside confrontations with political and systemic ideologies. Not a unitary, group ideology led by a leader, but rather free personal growth with clearly pre-determined rules. This hostile setting where everyone must succeed on their own creates a stimulating environment, and the ‘Representation of Decay’ exhibition is the summary of such intense work of each exhibitioner in the past year.
