We often imagine evolution as a journey from primitive forms towards ever more complex and perfected ones. Nature, however, has no predetermined goal, nor any obligation to follow the path we consider progress. Perhaps future forms of life will bear a surprising resemblance to those of the distant past, yet carry within them the accumulated experience of millions of years of preceding evolution. And the characteristics we now consider primitive may ultimately prove to be the most valuable traits life has ever acquired. The ability to survive in a hostile environment would thus come at the cost of transforming into something in which we could no longer recognise even the faintest resemblance to ourselves.
