Goodness
Trafo Gallery, Prague, Czech Republic
2014
The object was created for the exhibition Representation of Good by the Reprezentace group at Trafo Gallery in Prague in 2014. The exhibition explored the shifting nature of the concept of good and its dependence on the perspective from which it is perceived. The installation occupied a key architectural point in the gallery between two load-bearing columns. Inflatable forms derived from children’s toys were pressurized within the confined space, where they deformed against one another and merged into a single organic whole resembling a living, pulsating body. Their white colour and soft, rounded forms gave the object an apparently friendly and harmless character. Yet the same pressure that gave the object its form and kept it under tension also carried the potential for its destruction. When overinflated, one of its parts actually burst. The installation thus approached good as a force that can sustain existence, but which, once a certain threshold is exceeded, can turn against it.
