Bearing

UFFO Gallery, Trutnov

Czech Republic, 2016

The self-supporting installation was created specifically for the space of the UFFO Gallery in Trutnov. It consists of rectangular blocks positioned on the gallery’s structural columns at eccentric angles, held in place solely by their own weight and the tension created by their positioning. They are neither anchored nor attached in any way. Their placement creates the optical impression that they are disrupting the stability of the columns themselves, and with them the sense of stability of the entire space. The gallery’s structural elements, whose function is to support and stabilize, are thus placed in the opposite situation: they themselves appear as though their load-bearing capacity has been called into question. The installation also responds to the rectilinear geometry of the gallery’s architecture. The horizontal and vertical lines of the interior continue through the glass walls into the surrounding prefabricated housing blocks, while the tilted forms disrupt this order and introduce movement into it. Different parts of the installation combine the principles of extrusion, displacement, growth, and the multiplication of load-bearing capacity.
