The anamorphic portrait of American entrepreneur Jasper Newton Daniel (c. 1849–1911), founder of Jack Daniel’s, is composed of objects connected with the history of the Jack Daniel’s brand and the Brown-Forman company. The limited range of thematically appropriate objects led to the concentration of the entire spatial composition within the portrait itself. Individual objects of different sizes and colour tones form the face, while the background consists of historical photographs of the Lynchburg distillery and Brown-Forman. The installation also incorporates real candles, whose flames enter directly into the image when lit and alter the atmosphere of the composition. The living light, together with historical photographs and objects connected with whisky production, evokes the atmosphere of the period from which the Jack Daniel’s brand emerged.
